Hypothyroidism, or the condition of having an underactive thyroid gland, can wreak havoc on your body. It causes weight gain, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, mood swings and more. Find out more about hypothyroidism and your options for thyroid treatment.
What Is A Thyroid Hormone Imbalance?
First of all, the thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the middle of the lower neck. It produces hormones that help regulate every cell in the human body. It regulates your body temperature, heart rate, and metabolism. This is why even a minor problem with your thyroid can cause a myriad of symptoms throughout your body.
Abnormal function of the thyroid gland causes a hormone imbalance. There are various causes for improper thyroid function, but the four most common are:
+ Exposure to radiation or heavy metals
+ Deficiency in iodine and selenium
+ Food allergies or intolerance, such as gluten and A1 casein allergy
+ Another hormone imbalance, such as one caused by high cortisol from stress, too many carbs, or too little fat in the diet
Options for Thyroid Treatment
Although treatment of hypothyroidism is painless, it isn’t always easy. There are several different options available for treating an underactive thyroid. However, we have found the most effective treatment is replenishing the thyroid hormones with desiccated thyroid.
What Is The Traditional Medical Remedy For Hypothyroidism?
If you have hypothyroidism, a traditional doctor will most likely prescribe Levothyroxine, which is the generic name for the synthetic version of thyroxine (commonly referred to as T4). The drug is sold under several different brand names including Synthroid, Levothroid, Levoxyl, Synthroid, Tirosint, and Unithroid. If you’ve been prescribed any of these drugs, you are taking a synthetic T4 hormone.
Unfortunately, for many people that suffer from hypothyroidism, Levothyroxine doesn’t completely cure some or all of their symptoms. This is because your body needs to convert T4 into T3 before cells can use it. For many patients, that doesn’t happen correctly. So even though they are taking the correct dose of T4, their bodies aren’t able to fully utilize it.
What Are Natural Remedies For Hypothyroidism?
Many patients report much better results by taking desiccated thyroid. Desiccated thyroid treatment is natural and bioidentical to hormones the human thyroid gland produces. It contains T3 and T4 hormones, as well as other thyroid hormones and nutrients your cells need.
Experts also recommend lifestyle and diet changes to give your body the best chance of a full recovery.
Avoid gluten and A1 casein.
These hybridized proteins can cause leaky gut, which can lead to inflammation and adverse effects to proper thyroid function.
Avoid bottles with BPA.
BPA is a compound found in some plastics that disrupts the endocrine system. You can ingest it by drinking from bottles containing the compound. Look for products sold in certified BPA-free containers.
Monitor your iodine levels.
If your iodine levels are low, try an organic liquid iodine supplement.
Eat foods containing selenium.
Selenium helps the thyroid gland function as it should. Some selenium-rich foods include brazil nuts, seafood, tuna, turkey, chicken, and seeds.
Monitor carbohydrate intake.
You don’t need to cut carbs out of your diet completely. However, reducing your intake of unnecessary carbohydrates and sugars and replacing them with healthy fats helps your body maintain its hormonal balance. Some excellent sources of healthy fats are avocado, coconut products like oil and milk, beef, wild salmon, and chia and flaxseeds.
